Erwin is a small town but you'll still find lodging to satisfy the most picky hiker. We have 3 hotels, 2 hostels, and a sort-of-B&B within 5 miles of downtown.. For your convenience we can meet you and you can follow us to free parking right off the trail at the Nolichucky River or we can meet you at the location of your choosing. See http://www.hikershuttles.com/parking.html for other safe parking options. As a hiker, here's my opinion about the various places to stay in Erwin. Regardless of which you choose we expect you'll have a good experience as each location has something going for it.
The Nolichucky Hostel (AKA, Uncle Johnny's) - Serving hikers since 1998, Uncle Johnny's is "The Classic". Located right on the trail and across from the Nolichucky River, this location provides an inexpensive bunkhouse and several well appointed cabins. For hikers on a budget or just looking for a place to crash tenting is also available in a large shaded grassy area perfect for pitching a tent. The hostel also has a washer and dryer on site and there is a bathhouse with showers. If you need gear or hiking supplies, including a good assortment of food, there is a surprisingly good outfitter here - I believe you could buy anything you need except for shoes. New for 2017 is a covered hammock hanging area with overhead lighting and power outlets for each hammock. Here's the website: http://www.unclejohnnys.net/index.html.
Super 8 - In all honesty, and with respect to all 3 hotels, this is probably the best place for hikers to stay. Not only will you have privacy, you can walk around town at your convenience and they now have a washer and dryer on site.. You're within easy walking distance to everything the town has to offer, including 4 fast food restaurants and a very good convenience store within a quarter mile. A large grocery store, and a Mexican restaurant are approximately 1 mile and you'll walk by a Walgreens on the way. The town post office, movie theater, and 2 local restaurants are also within a mile in the downtown area. Splitting a room with someone and having your own facilities, TV, and free breakfast pretty much make it the best deal around. The owners are hiker friendly. The hotel is clean and serves a continental breakfast each morning. Mountain Inn & Suites - If you're comfortable hitching, don't mind paying a few bucks for a shuttle in and out of town, or if you have a car - this is the nicest place to stay in town. A former Holiday Inn, Mountain Inn & Suites has full amenities including a hot tub and pool. The breakfast is a real meal and if you're a coffee drinker they have fresh coffee 24/7 (free of course). This hotel also has a washer and dryer so you can avoid a trip to the laundromat. The hotel is next to a decent convenient store (beer) and there is a grocery store, Dollar General, and pizza place within a mile or so. This hotel is also gracious enough to allow section hikers to park free even if they're not guests of the hotel. I'd say this is the safest parking in town - the lot is lit and monitored by cameras. If you do park here and aren't a guest please park in back and let the staff know your car is back there and leave them your contact info and expected date of return. Best Southern - This is a motel, not a hotel. Rooms are accessed from outside. It's clean enough but it's an older hotel and is showing its age. Big, huge bonus for some: They allow dogs. It's also within walking distance (less than a mile) from a grocery store, Dollar General, and pizza place. There's a convenience store also within walking distance. This is the most inexpensive lodging available in town. No website, but here's the TripAdvisor page for the motel: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g55034-d3333180-Reviews-Best_Southern_Motel-Erwin_Tennessee.html.
Cantarrosa Farm - Not quite a hostel and not quite a bed and breakfast, Cantarrosa Farm is a pretty amazing place. Located right on the banks of the Nolichucky River, this establishment offers 2 nicely appointed cabin and lodging in the home of Mike and Peggy, your hosts. They've been in business a couple of seasons and are really reaching out to the hiker community. Universally praised, if you want to chill away from the city and not have to deal with a crowd check them out. The website is http://www.cantarrosofarm.com/.
